Rugg's Recommendations on the Colleges
(26th Edition)

We are particularly fond of this book because it provides a comprehensive
review of universities and colleges based on majors, size, and geographic
region. Even if the college applicant has a particular focus with his or her
college selection, this book is still likely to open your eyes to possibilities
you may have otherwise overlooked. The guide's thorough
research and inclusion of smaller regional schools which excel in a particular
field but do not get the same publicity as the more prestigious national schools
also make this a "highly recommend".
The Insider's Guide to the Colleges:
2009 (35th Edition)

This book is a bit more "cutting edge" than the Rugg's book, but we
believe it covers many topics that are of interest and importance to college
applicants. Over 300 colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada are
covered. Information pertaining to academics, faculty, housing, food, dating, and more are included on each school along with a
description of the types of students at each school. This is definitely worth a
read when you are finalizing your list of colleges to which to apply!
The College Board Book of Majors: 2nd Edition

An excellent reference for all the accredited colleges and universities.
Visiting College Campuses (7th Edition)

Brochures, CD ROMs, web sites, etc. can not take the place of an
actual, live campus visit. The 250 most frequently-toured U.S. campuses are covered in this
guide and information such as maps, dormitory stay options, and nearby hotels
are included. Also, there is good advice on how to meet the admissions staff and professors.
Looking Beyond the Ivy League: Finding the College That's
Right for You

We can't stress enough that there is no one school that is
not the right choice for everyone. There are good tips in this book to help you
avoid many of the pitfalls in that all-important first college admission step.
Best 368 Colleges: 2009 Edition

The school profiles are very complete and contain such pertinent
information as admissions criteria, deadlines, and the all-important social life. While we
like this book a lot, we have a few slight reservations about the subjectivity of some of the
college students surveyed for this book. Despite the purported 110,000 surveys
that were conducted, it seems that some individual surveys may have been given
additional weight in the interests of making the book more cutting edge.
Spying on the College of Your Choice

Do you want to know what you should really be considering
when you select the college where you will spend the next 4 (or more!) years of
your life? Then this book is for you. You can see our 3-page interview with the
author in our feature content section for even more information.
The College Admissions Mystique

A good insider account of the admissions process is
presented along with insights into why certain applicants are or are not
accepted. This is the best book written on the topic of admission. Nonetheless,
admission is part science and part art. What works for the trombone-playing
neighbor may not work for the varsity quarterback applicant. As a result, if you
are very serious about your college applications and you are applying to
"stretch" schools, you would be best advised to find a competent
admissions counselor with whom to work.
